Back to Heating Forward to doors For the disassembly of the steering wheel lock I found different methods in the world wide web and I'd like to present the one I found best. First put a center punch at the lock pinch at the highest possible place (here done with a wood drill). Drill with a 3mm-Metaldrill. This drilling is extended now up to 7mm (=strength of lock pinch). The same is done at the opposite side (likewise at the highest possible accessible point). If the lower part of the lock pinch should not fall down, you can use a nail and hammer to disassemble these parts. In the case of unsuccessful drilling use a larger drill. The remaining parts of the pinch can be pushed upwards with a drill and a hammer. Here we can see the parts disassembled... ... and here all parts, in order to fasten the steering wheel at its intended place. The rectangular plates (photo above, to the left of the lock pinch) are the reason, why the steering wheel lock must be removed after a framework exchange. The steering wheel must be aligned with these wearing parts in such a way that it is absolutely straight on the pinion!!! If there are tensions (the lever of the steering wheel is enormously large), sooner or later the steering pinion will be destroyed or the steering column will crack!!! Here the factory-installed nuts which fasten the steering lock pinch. With tightening the nuts, the top with the M7 nut tears off and the lower conical part with the thread holds the pinch. Here also a commercial M7-nut can be used. Theft security suffers from it, but it's easy to service (because easily dismantlable) in this variant. Disassembling the steering wheel.Open the steering wheel lock first. If that cannot be done any longer, see the description above. Now the metal plate covering the steering wheel lock, has to be unscrewed. This screw lies in secret (red arrow) and is to be loosened with a 7mm wrench. Here the construction unit loosened. Now the steering wheel can be turned so far that you can loosen the two hexagon head screws of the steering lock. If these were unscrewed, the two halves of the steering wheel lock fall down or can easily be taken out. The screw of the clip connecting the steering wheel and pinion in the engine compartment, has to be completely removed now (not only loosen the screw). When assembling the steering, those screw has to be tightened carefully!!!! The nut is a self locking model and the clip should not be disorted while fixing the nut, which could cause the cracking of the steering column!!!. Thanks to Walter, who has published an article at the German 2CV magazine Entenschnabel about that serious problem. Now the steering wheel can be pulled out. If it clamps too strong on the pinion, you can use a hammer from downside (use a pice of wood to avoid damage of the steering wheel). Back to Heating Forward to doors |
